When the Aspen Kit was released at the beginning of this month, Kay wrote a great tutorial on creating dimensional scenes using the tree stencil in the Lite kit. I really like her creation using the birch trees, so I recreated it using the Aspen Digital Kit. As a refresher, here's Kay's card:
1. Create a new document; mine is 4.25 x 5.5.
2. Add the light blue background and the birch stamp.
3. Duplicate the birch stamp layer and hide the lower layer by clicking on the eye icon in the layer's palette.
4. Use a small hard-edged eraser to remove the stamp border.
5. Create a new layer UNDER the birch stamp layer that you just worked on.
6. Use a medium sized hard-edged brush to color the birch trees white.
7. Click the eye icon to hide the birch stamp layer and the white layer.
8. Click the eye icon on the layer that we hid in step 3.
9. Create a new layer directly above the layer in step 8; draw a circle and color it yellow-orange.
Add a small drop shadow.
10. Command+Click (MacOS) or Ctrl+Click (Windows) on the thumbnail in the layer palette; you'll see marching ants around the circle.
11. Add a warm orange tint around the edge of the circle, using a soft-edged brush.
12. Click the eye icon for the 2 layers that were hidden in step 7.
13. Click the white layer to make it active. Add a drop shadow to give it a bit of dimension.
14. Turn it into a digital card!
As an added bonus, here's a variation I made for my Christmas cards this year:
I printed the red panel with the birch stamp and sentiment as a single image, trimmed it and layered it on a white card base.
I hope this little tutorial has illustrated just how easy it can be to recreate a paper technique with digital tools. Please give it a try!
See you next week!
-Ron
