Rag Quilt Technique and Free Sketch

My daughter's rag quilt.

I love my daughter's rag quilt that her grandmother made when she was little, and it got me thinking . . . could I recreate this effect in paper? I grabbed my handy Tonic paper distress tool and paper from the Dungarees kit and got to work on this card.

I also made a set of free instructions to go along with the May 2014 card sketch provided by my friend Anne Marie at the Coffeehouse forum and used it as the basis for my rag quilt card.

Follow the steps below to create the card.

1. Download the free cutting instructions and assemble your cards.

2. Trim twelve 1 x 15/16" pieces from a sheet of the Dark Blue Print from the Club Scrap Dungarees kit. Don't freak when you see the 15/16" measurement; it's just a little shy of 1". (The squares are not from the cutting instructions listed above.)

3. Fray the edges of each square with a Tonic paper distressing tool.

4. Rub Silver Gelatos along the edges of each square.

5. Adhere squares vertically onto to the Light Blue panel for a perfect fit, and attach the matted Dungarees Greeting quote during final card assembly.

Free Cardmaking Sketch

Member Debby Hernandez put in a request on the forum for cardmaking instructions using 12x12 papers. Here's a new one for you!

I created four cards with these instructions, 12x12 Beige and Light Green papers from the Trees kit, several stamps from the Trees Borders & Backgrounds unmounted stamps and Hybrid Inks in Moss, Leaf, Spruce* and Earth.

I used stamps and inks to alter the panels so I could differentiate them for layering.

Here is how I created contrast with the nesting panels.

Card One

1. Ink the 3.5x4.75" Light Green panel with a direct-to-paper technique. I love the way the Leaf ink reveals the gorgeous texture of the paper.

2. Create a unique pattern with the diamond stamps from the UM Borders & Backgrounds sheet. I cut the diamonds apart and reconfigured them into this pattern on my acrylic block.

3. Stamp a pattern onto one of the tan card bases with Earth ink.

4. Stamp one 1.75x2.5" Beige panel with Earth ink and the dotty "noise" stamp. Stamp one 1x4.25" Beige panel with the sentiment stamp and Earth ink. Wrap a small piece of the paper paper rafia around the panel and adhere all layers to the card base.

Card Two

1. Stamp onto one Light Green card base with the large tree image and Spruce ink.

2. Use the direct-to-paper ink technique from step one for the 3.5x4.75" Beige panel and the diamond technique for the 1.75x2.5" Light Green panel. Stamp a sentiment onto the 1x4.25" strip. Ink a small portion of the large tree stamp as a focal image next to the sentiment.

Card Three

1. Repeatedly stamp the dotty "noise" image onto the Light Green card base with Moss, Spruce and Leaf inks.

2. Ink the leaves of the tree image with assorted shades of green, and use a brown marker to color the branches; stamp onto the 3.5x4.75" Beige panel.

3. Use the direct-to-paper technique on the remaining 1.75x2.5" Light Green panel.

4. Stamp the diamond pattern onto the 1x4.25" panel from left to right using increasingly lighter shades of ink to create an ombré effect. Finish by stamping the sentiment in Earth ink.

Card Four

1. Use the direct-to-paper technique with Earth ink on the Beige card base.

2. Stamp the tree image with the coloring technique from the previous card and stamp onto the remaining 3.5x4.75" Light Green and 1.5x.25" panels. Align the images when layering onto the completed card.

3. Stamp the sentiment onto the remaining tan 1x4.25" panel and add the dotty "noise" stamped image with the ombré effect and Spruce ink.

ALCM instructions plus a Bonus Freebie!

I love playing along with the challenges over at the Coffeehouse Forum and one of my favorites is the Card Sketch Challenge now hosted by members Anne Marie and Marya. They have already come up with some amazing sketches and this months' sketch is no different.

I sat down and created some simple ALCM aka card making instructions for this fun sketch.

 There were some nice scraps left over from this ALCM so I made a second sketch using the scraps and added a simple set of card base cutting instructions for that sketch as well!   Enjoy!

Editor's note:  I just realized I forgot to mention something... Ooops!  After I assembled the Card Sketch Challenge card it looked like this.

*The diamond points are sticking over the edges.

Flip the card over and trim off the access cardstock to create the final look.

Lock & Key: Free Printable!

So free is good, right? I love free. And easy. But free AND easy? Now that's awesome!

Jac created a fun printable using the Lock & Key collection. The elements on the printable can be used in any way you please, but they are perfect for whipping up a few easy cards. I got to play with the printables last night. Wanna see what I made?

The two larger elements are the perfect size for use on A2 cards (4-1/4 x 5-1/2" finished size). After printing and trimming each of the pieces out, I matted and layered them using papers from the Lock & Key Club Scrap kit.

I colored in the "Love" stamp from the Collection UM using an Aquarelle Watercolor pencil. The metal key charm is a goodie in the Club Scrap kit.

The card above was super-simple. Just a few mattes and pop dots for a little dimension.

For this last one, I grabbed a 4-1/2 x 6-1/4" gatefold card from my stash, a fiber from the Lock & Key Greetings to Go pack and a sentiment from the Collection UM.

So happy to be back after my wonderfully creative weekend with my friends at the Annual August Club Scrap Retreat. We had a blast and NO I will not be posting any spoilers, you all will just have to wait until after the October Retreat and Retreat in a Box 2013 ships. All I can say is that it was an amazing time and I really wish I could go back and do it all again in October.

Back to the blog at hand. I always feel so inspired after returning from Retreat. I spent Saturday afternoon playing with my homemade glimmer mists from Retreat in a Box 2012. I had helped Tricia by testing different formulas in preparation for this Creative Concoctions workshop. So much fun!
I created a background paper using the mists, my Sorrento mask and stamps to match my 2 other cardstock colors. I chose a light blue from Cyprus (Sept. 2008 kit)  and a lime green from Comics (Feb. 2011 kit).

untouched area of your artwork to create more layers of color and masking.

I love creating for the many challenges at the Club Scrap forum. One of my favorites is the Card Sketch Challenge hosted by the talented Jen Rodgers. She has been hosting this fun challenge for 2 years. We will miss her as she has decided to give up the reins hosting this popular challenge beginning next month. I created a free ALCM (Assembly Line CardMaking) set of cutting instructions based on the August sketch.  Enjoy!

Here are the steps I used to create 3 cards.

Stamp Sorrento UM stamp images in black on your masked background paper.

Cut all 3 pieces of cardstock following the ALCM instructions.
Ink the edges of all of your pieces using black ink.

Punch shapes out of the 2.25x3.5" scraps
using your favorite punch (Fiskars flower).

Punch centers using remaining cardstock and a tiny sun punch.

Layer alternating cardstocks of sun centers and flowers.

Add flowers to cards using a black pop dot.

Finished cards with added adhesive rhinestones from stash.
