Round the Corner with Gel Printing

My granddaughter and I played with gel printing plates for about four hours on a Sunday afternoon. We had a blast. (It looks like Julie and I both had the same creative inspiration this week!)

I was using the 8" round plate from Gelli Arts and was printing onto 8.5x11 white plain paper with great results. McKenna was using the 6" plate and made several dozen tags which she added to greeting cards. I didn't get photos of her beautiful projects--duh!

I took the stack of round images and simply cut each sheet into four panels measuring 3.75x5". Each panel had a fourth of the "pie" and allowed some open space for stamped images and greetings.

Appropriate for our 15th anniversary . . . I went back a few years with my stamp selections.
Stamped images react differently on an acrylic paint base; heat set to dry.
As a whole, the printed image was cool, but I love it even more as a partial element on each card.
I enjoyed choosing a color-coordinating panel for each finished piece of art.
See how that bird is on top of the world?
I thought the green texture resembled a watermelon. Perfect for those Picnic stamps!
The black ink looks great on the colored background, but the watercolored flowers add so much!
I curved the "ants" image on the mounting block before stamping.
Stamps can be used to remove paint from the plate before creating the print. Be sure to clean the stamp immediately.
Celebrate fifteen years of Club Scrap artwork, and take some time to stamp images from older collections in your stash. There's a treasure trove of fun to be had!

Torn Gelli Plate Technique

The look of torn paper and a Gelli Arts Printing Plate creation all in one . . . I think I am in heaven.

Gelli prints stamped with Picnic Greetings UM sentiments. Picnic card bases and panels.
The funny and talented Barbara Gray created this technique video, and I couldn't wait to try it and share the results.

Are you ready to get creative? Grab a Gelli Arts Printing Plate, and let's go!

Allow the first layer of blue acrylic paint to dry. Brayer a thin layer of fuchsia paint and immediately apply Geometrics stencil. Use copy paper and bubble wrap to remove layers of fuschia paint while wet. Allow to dry completely.
Brayer on thin layer of green acrylic.
Use torn copy paper to mask area of paint removal.
Lay white paper over the torn paper and gel plate. Rub firmly to ensure a successful print.
Carefully peel off the print, making sure all layers of paint adhere to the white paper.
Peel the torn paper off the gel plate.
Save torn paper mask for use on ATCs.
Achieve several unique looks by using various stencils and paint colors.
ATCs inspired by Karen's post!

Adhere scraps from gel prints onto 2.5x3.5" Dungarees Light Blue and Picnic Dark Blue ATC bases. Embellish with Picnic Borders & Backgrounds and Greetings UM watermelon slices. Stamp with Black India ink and paint with matching green and fuchsia acrylic paints.
What are your favorite Gelli Arts printing techniques?

I hope you have a terrifically crafty week.

Branching Out with Trees

I thought I'd experiment with some techniques to create backgrounds for the beautiful stamp images this month. It's my way of "branching out" and trying something different! So I gathered a few supplies and got started.

Gelatos create a great watercolor effect. Choose three coordinating colors and blend with a waterbrush.

I learned this next technique a number of years ago: Use an ink applicator tool to apply three shades of Distress Ink to a plain white panel. Sprinkle droplets of water onto the ink. It will act as a resist and leave a cool pattern behind.

Next, grab a spare panel of smooth-finish white paper and apply four colors of CS Hybrid Inks direct-to-paper. Blend with a paper towel.

I finally booked some play time with my new Gelli Arts Printing Plate! To mimic my examples, apply three Adirondack Metallic Acrylic paints, blend onto the gel plate with a brayer. Press plain white panels onto the plate to get several "generations" of imprints. I also tried stamping the dotty texture stamp into the paint, and stamped off the excess onto yet another panel. I have a lot to learn, but I was pretty happy with my first try!

After play time is done, select some favorites to turn into completed cards.

Collection UM stamp on Hybrid ink panel.
Left card is Gelli Plate with B&B stamps. Right card is Gelatos with Art Nouveau UM.
Two different "generations" from the Gelli Plate with Greeting UM sentiment.
The Distress ink "droplet" panel made a cute gift tag!
I hope you'll branch out and try a few different techniques with this versatile collection!

Creatively yours,
Karen

Gelli Plate - Art Orphan Paper Pack

Recently I participated in the Big Deal Blog Hop and shared the details on how to create your own paper pack on my CapeScrapper Blog.  Using Bookbinding, Padding and Laminating Glue and a stack of art orphans, created using my Gelli Plate, I now have a paper pack of artsy goodness.

Today I want to share how I created one of these papers in more detail.

Step 1. Squirt a few dots of red acrylic paint onto your Gelli Plate and roll on with a rubber brayer.

Step 2. Use the Big Deal tiny suits stamp from the Art Nouveau UM sheet to remove some of the red paint by dabbing it randomly over the wet painted surface.

Step 3. Place a sheet of plain white paper down onto the stamped Gelli Plate and remove.

Step 4. Wipe your Gelli plate clean between paint applications. Add dots of gold paint to the plate and roll flat with the brayer.  Lay a stencil (Full Circle 2012) on top of the wet paint and remove to the red painted paper. With another sheet of paper over the top of the wet stencil, burnish down onto red painted paper.

Step 5. Lay down a Masking stencil (Tahiti 2012) directly onto clean Gelli Plate. Add dots of white acrylic paint and roll on over the stencil.

Step 6. Carefully remove the stencil.

Step 7. Lay down the gold and red paper panel onto the wet white acrylic paint and burnish.

Step 8. Remove the paper to reveal the image.

Step 9. Stamp over the finished piece using the same Big Deal tiny suits Art Nouveau stamp and a checked stamp from the Concrete Playground 2010 Crafter Classic stamp set.

You can achieve so many different looks each time.

I made this card using a portion of the art orphan, a Take Wing red panel, Watercolor Blossoms "thinking of you" sentiment, and Big Deal brads.

Here are some of the other papers I created using a variety of stamps, stencils, masks, and paints.

Thanks so much for stopping by and hope you have a creative weekend.
